The Basque town of Biarritz lies just north of the Spanish border on the south western coast of France. The luxurious seaside town lies on the Bay of Biscay and has been a popular resort for over 150 years, when Empress Eugenie (the wife of Napoleon III) fell in love with this part of the Basque country and built a Palace on the beach.

The resort became popular with aristocracy from all over Europe, with regular visits from the British Royal family and the Russian nobility. The days of Biarritz being reserved for royalty and high society are long gone and today Biarritz is an affordable, vibrant and cosmopolitan town with magnificent beaches.

For those looking for less demanding exercise, the main promenade offers some wonderfully gentle strolls. Biarritz has a good mix of restaurants and brassieres, offering a variety of good local cuisine and classic French fare. It also has an active nightlife that includes many bars, nightclubs and a casino.
